This mosaic floor was found in the royal quarter of ancient Alexandria. Its central panel, the emblema, shows a hunter, but the rest of the scene is missing. The emblema is surrounded by a frame of animals, griffins and tigers. This floor must have decorated one of the large luxurious houses of the early times of the newly built city, perhaps someone of the first generation of Macedonians in Alexandria. The floor is executed in pebbles technique in additionto opus tesselatum and strips of lead.Macedonian Period (320-300 BC) Champollion Street, Alexandria Pebbles, Marble Cubes, and Lead Strips |
