Under a modern viaduct, which crosses the river Ulla, are the ruins of the old fortress: `Castellum Honesti`. They were raised in the s. XII by order of Archbishop GelmÃÂrez, with the mission of blocking the way to the Scandinavian and Saracen expeditions that were heading to Compostela. During the s. XVIII the walls were still standing and served to defend against English attacks. Later they fell into abandonment until they were left in their current state. These towers were declared a National Monument and exhibit their grandeur when the Viking Pilgrimage is held, which recalls the pillage of the Norman warriors on the coastal towns of the Arousa estuary.
