This is an image of Hoar Frosted Oak trees on a winter afternoon along Highway 18, nicknamed `Rim of the World Highway`, in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. The water vapor in the air has frozen onto the thin branches and twigs of the trees. In the late afternoon cold, the sun beginning to set, has given the fog a pinkish aspen glow effect which is reflected by the snow on the ground. The wet trunks of the oak tree appear black and contrast with the snow. The whole mood with the light effects and the frost is mystical beautiful and magical. It is a winter wonderland. Although the roads are mostly dry one must still exercise caution when driving because there can be unexpected icy patches. It can be used to express winter season themes, winter driving hazards or safety, and mountain travel.
