Hartwell Tavern, along the Battle Road Trail Bay Road between Lexington and Concord Massachusetts. .The Hartwell home was built in 1732. In 1756 a portion of the home was made into an inn and tavern. Bay Road connected Boston to Crown Point, NY. The old home/tavern is known as a witness house because it was here when the road was used by the British, during the American Revolutionary War, to raid Concord of potential American military supplies. The battle in Concord was the first of the American Revolution. As the British marched back to Boston they were under constant attack along this road.
