These hand pulled rickshaws serve as a typical cultural entity synonymous with Kolkata since time immemorial. What is not obvious and a significant thing to note is these rickshaws form a very important part of public transport system in New market area in the city which is otherwise a very crowded place and hub of Bangladeshi tourists visiting Kolkata, who exclusively avail these rickshaws to move locally around the area in contrast to western tourists or the local population.Incidentally, these rickshaw puller contingent comprises of old men who flock the city to earn a living from surrounding states and live their life as outsiders .The most interesting part is to appreciate that how outsiders connect in a way to facilitate their purpose in the city which serves as a mere backdrop for such extraordinary cultural tapestry.The photo is a part of narrative series portraying various blue collar jobs in Kolkata.
