The Gwalia gold mine was discovered in 1896 and produced until 1963. It produced 2.5 million ounces of gold. The headgear was used to move men and material into and out of the gold mine. It was powered by a steam winder that was the largest in Australia, installed in 1913. It had a descent speed of 500m per minute.
