Turtles and other species such as sea lions and rays are caught in often illegal long line fishing traps. Usually as discarded by catch of targeted shark fishing for the Asian finning industry and market. Most perish or loose limbs, this individual survived despite a near amputation by the nylon and steel fishing line wrapped around its fore limb. Illegal fishing still persists inside the Galapagos Marine Reserve.
