When San Francisco acquired the Outside Lands area, the very windy sandy area along the ocean on the western edge of the city,in 1868,there was a map drawn up shortly after, and already showing where the highway should be. There even was a train built for the 1894 Midwinter Exposition. As use of cars started to increase by the 1900's,there was already talk of making it both wider and safer. It also made it much easier for locals and tourists alike to get to the Cliff House, the third one built and open in 1909,still standing today, although closed in 2023. As seen 12 February 2018.
