The Great blue heron, Ardea herodias, is one of the largest aquatic birds in the Americas. Because of where they live, their primary diet consists mainly of smaller fish, as well as aquatic plants. But they are also known to eat smaller crustacean, as well as reptiles and amphibians, as well as small rodents, like this House mouse, Mus musculus.
Although we do know what they eat, what we still are not sure of is, why do they seem to play with their food before eating eat? Gently putting it down and picking it back up, over and over and over again, as seen in Pioneer Meadow in Golden Gate Park 22 April 2022.
