The Great Blue Heron Ardeidae Herodias is a common wetland bird found in New York State. It is the largest heron species in North America and is easily recognizable by its tall stature, long legs, and long beak. Found in a variety of habitats, including wetlands, marshes, lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. They are often seen wading in shallow water, patiently hunting for fish, frogs, and other small aquatic creatures. Their long necks and sharp eyesight help them easily spot their prey. Great Blue Herons color depend on maturity and location of the bird. They appear blue gray from a distance, with a wide black stripe over the eye, yellow orange beaks. In flight, the upper side of the wing is two-toned: pale on the forewing and darker on the flight feathers. Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge Cayuga Lake NYS FingerLakes.
