Gray cranes on the field against the background of the forest. The grey crane Latin: Grus grus, Grus communis is a large bird found in Europe and Asia; it is the second largest species of crane. The grey crane breeds in Northern and Western Europe; in most of Russia, Northern Mongolia and China. It breeds mainly in swampy areas: hummocky swamps surrounded by forest, in meadows overgrown with sedge or reeds, in swampy floodplains of rivers. They prefer large isolated wetlands, but if there is a lack of such places, they can settle in small areas near agricultural land. For wintering choose hills densely covered with grassy vegetation; often settle near agricultural land and pastures.
