The sign in Hebrew reads simply, `Herzl.` It marks the gravesite of the founder of modern political Zionism, Theodore Herzl, who died at 44 in 1904. The site is on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem and is the site of many special state ceremonies. Theodore Herzl was an Austro-Hungarian Jewish lawyer, journalist, political activist, and playwright. He urged that in response to an international anti-Semitic political and social environment, the Jewish people should move to what was then Palestine.
