The Grand Saint Bernard pass (2469) is the most ancient pass of the Western European Alps, between the canton of Valais in Switzerland and Aosta province of Italy. In 1049, Menthon Bernard (later to become St Bernard) opened a hospice for travelers at the pass' highest point. Later the hospice became famous for the use of St. Bernard dogs for rescue operations.
