The Golgi complex, also known as the Golgi apparatus or Golgi body, is an essential organelle found in eukaryotic cells. It was first discovered by the Italian scientist Camillo Golgi in the late 19th century. The Golgi complex consists of a series of flattened, membrane-bound sacs called cisternae, which are stacked on top of each other like pancakes. These cisternae are interconnected by tubular structures and vesicles. The Golgi complex is typically located near the nucleus and the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) within the cell. The Golgi complex plays a crucial role in the processing, sorting, and packaging of proteins and lipids synthesized by the endoplasmic reticulum.
