The Doitsu High Quality Koi, Japan Strain is a beautiful koi with contrasting scale patterns. A distinct arrangement of large, mirror-like scales along the back dorsal line or sides lateral line distinguishes the Doitsu Koi from fully scaled Japanese Koi. For this reason, the Doitsu Koi is sometimes called the Mirror-scale Koi. Originally imported to Japan from Germany, the Doitsu Koi went through centuries of selective breeding and is now available in an impressive array of color patterns. Doitsugoi German carp or Doitsu were originally imported from Germany to Japan in the late 1800`s as a food fish. Doitsu have either no scales at all and referred to as `leather carp`, or they have a line of large scales along their lateral and dorsal lines and are referred to a `mirror carp`. There is a Doitsu version of almost every variety; Doitsu Kohaku, Doitsu Sanke, Doitsu Yamato Nishiki, and Doitsu Hariwake just to name a few. By crossing Doitsugoi with Nishikigoi Japanese breeders literally doubled the number of available varieties.
