Waves occur on any free flowing body of water as the action of wind blowing over them. Being able to travel thousands of miles, they can be small ripples to over a hundred feet in height. The physics of wave formation is very complicated and complex, but the simple process of watching or listening to waves have a calming effect on the brain. This is from the rhythmic, rolling action of the waves. About nine miles off the coast of Carpinteria are four oil platforms, straddling the line between state and federal lands. Being up to nine hundred feet tall, they can be plainly seen.
