The Renaissance Upland Gate in Gdańsk, built in 1575, was the main entrance gate to the city, opening the so-called Royal Way; until 1895 it was within the sixteenth-century fortifications, between the Bastion of St. Elżbieta and the Kara Bastion; the massive form of the gate referred to the city gates in Antwerp based on Italian patterns; on the ground floor, four double Tuscan pilasters flank three semicircular passages - the middle one, the highest one, is intended for vehicular traffic, two side ones are intended for pedestrian traffic; on the eastern façade, facing the Torture Chamber, there is a relief coat of arms of the German Empire, added during the partitions in 1884.
