Despite the name, the French Bulldog have their beginnings in the United Kingdom, where they started breeding miniature or Toy dogs, which overlapped with the beginning of the Industrial Revolution at the start of the 19th Century. Because the Industrial Revolution caused a lot of apartment building to be replaced by factories, a lot of people lost their homes, so had to move elsewhere, including the Normandy region of France, and bringing with them these miniature or Toy dogs. Because these dogs quickly became very popular with the society ladies of France at the time, the newly arrived residents started importing them so quickly, there were now more of them in France than back home, and has remained a very popular dog now in America too.
