San Francisco is very proud of her culturally diverse residents, including her Southeast Asians, who came here fifty years ago now, as refugees. On the Gregorian Calendar, used by most Western cultures, their year always starts on the First of January, in the middle of winter. Many other calendars start, and come, at different times, including the Buddhist calendar as used by most Southeast Asians. Many of San Francisco's diverse groups of people have their own cultural celebrations, usually in the spring or summer times, now including the Southeast Asians community. Although only about 3 per cent of the San Francisco Bay Area are Buddhist, there were still a lot of people who came out to enjoy the festivities, which started with the Buddhist Monks New Year Blessing while the rest of the event finished setting up. As enjoyed 17 May 2025.
