A lone ocotillo flowering in the heart of the Algodones Dunes, Southern California, USA. At a distance, Fouquieria splendens looks like a cactus, but it is not. This species, one of the few in the monogenetic family Fouquieriaceae, is indigenous to the Sonoran Desert and Chihuahuan Desert in the Southwestern United States, and northern Mexico
