Former Soviet refuseniks Yosef Begun and Ida Nudel join Naomi Shemer, known as the `First Lady of Israeli Song and Poetry` as they demonstrate for the release from prison of convicted American spy for Israel Jonathan Pollard and his wife and accomplice, Anne Henderson Pollard. The venue for the demo was the then American Consulate in West Jerusalem, at 18 Gershon Agron Street on February 6, 1989. The Pollards were arrested in Washington, DC and convicted for violations of the Espionage Act for passing on to Israel classified intelligence information. Jonathan Pollard was given a life sentence of imprisonment. Anne Pollard served 3 and a half years of a 5-year sentence. Upon her release, she was served with divorce papers by her husband. Shortly thereafter, he wedded Elaine Zeitz, later known as Esther Pollard, who had been involved in the campaign to release him from prison. In October, 2020, Jonathan Pollard was pardoned by President Donald Trump and arrived in Israel with his wife on December 30, 2020, greeted at the airport by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The couple reside in Israel. Shemer died in 2004 at the age of 73.
