Pictured is the Column of Marzocco by Antonio Sarrocchi in Montepulciano in the province of Siena, Italy. The lion on the column is the symbol of the Florentine Republic and took the place of the Sienese wolf as a tangible symbol of the definitive alliance between Montepulciano and Florence in 1511 after sixteen years under Sienese domination. The column and lion were rebuilt in 1856 by sienese sculptor Antonio Sarrocchi, and the original is in the Civic Museum.
