Cranes are a clade Gruidae of large, long-legged and long-necked birds in the group Gruiformes. The Western flyway migration route for the continental cranes takes them in the autumn from their breeding areas in Scandanavia and Eastern Europe in a south-westerly direction through Germany, France and finally to Spain. Twice a year, cranes gather to rest in the shallow waters of the Bodden and lakes in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Nowhere else in central Europe has such a large gathering of vociferous stars of the skies, in the National Park of Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft up to 50,000 birds are expected to appear all at the same time in the autumn.
