In the past it often grew as aÃÂ weedÃÂ in cornfields & x28;in the broad sense of the word & x22;corn& x22;, referring toÃÂ grains, such as wheat, barley, rye, or oats& x29;, hence its name. It is nowÃÂ endangeredÃÂ in its native habitat byÃÂ agricultural intensification, particularly over-use ofÃÂ herbicides, destroying its habitat.
