The Fountain of Neptune in Florence Fontana del Nettuno, also called Il Biancone is located in Piazza della Signoria, right next to Palazzo Vecchio. The work of Bartolomeo Ammannati 1563-1565 and some of his students, including Il Giambologna, the fountain was built for the wedding of Francis I de` Medici and Grand Duchess Joanna of Austria in 1565, the order had been made to Baccio Bandinelli who drew the plan but died before the very start of construction. The figure of Neptune, in white Carrara marble, has the features of Cosimo I de` Medici and refers to the maritime power of Florence. |
