The female Ruby Red Breast Hummingbird lacks the bright red color that the males have. She is still beautifully iridescent green on her back and head with a cream or white colored breast and body. Hummingbirds are tiny with a slightly curved bill and dark eyes. This female sits at a red hummingbird feeder ready to enjoy some nectar - one part cane sugar to 4 parts water. No red dye is used as its been proven to harm these magnificent birds. They are fierce defenders of their food source and you'll often see them battling other hummingbirds near flowers or feeders. |
