European Honey Buzzard Pernis apivorus. It is a hawk-like bird of prey that shows great variation. It grows in mature deciduous forests and national parks. As their name suggests, honey buzzards feed on bees. Especially in breeding areas, they sit near the top of sparse trees on the edges of sparse forests and open lands, watching for wild bees flying around and disappearing near the ground. When they detect the location of the nest, they dig it out of the soil and disperse it, carrying it to their own nest with the pupae and larvae in their combs. They protect themselves from bee stings by the dense feathers on their head and by keeping their eyes closed.
