Photo taken inside the Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde. The basilica was commissioned by the Bishop of Marseille Eugene de Mazenod and designed by architect Jacques Henri Esperandieu. Construction began in 1853 in the same place where there was a chapel of the thirteenth century also dedicated to Our Lady of the Guard, protector of sailors, to end in 1864. The basilica is popular pilgrimage every August 15th at the 'assumption of Mary and many of its walls are covered with hundreds of votive as paintings, plaques, model boats and more.
