Opuntia stricta, commonly known as prickly pear, has various uses including culinary, medicinal, and ecological applications. The fruits are edible, though not as flavorful as some other Opuntia species, and can be made into syrups, jams, or jellies. Young pads (nopales) are also edible and can be cooked as a vegetable. Medicinally, the plant has been used traditionally to treat sores, pimples, and even syphilis, and some studies suggest it may help with diabetes management. Additionally, Opuntia stricta is used as a barrier fence, for sand dune fixation, and as an ornamental plant.
