A view of the courtyard and main entrance gate to the famous Strecno Castle in summer. The Strecno Castle is a ruin of gothic castle located near Zilina town in northern Slovakia. It is rightfully considered to be one of the most interesting castle ruins in Slovakia. The castle was ruined in the 17th century during fights and it was left in ruins after that. However the 20th century it has undergone massive renovation when it was archaeologically preserved and it is now opened for public as an open-air museum. Tourists can see many attractions there including indoor-museum in reconstructed part, sometimes fairy tale days for children, various art exhibitions, festivals and much more. This castle is also a popular location for filming historic movies. It is featured in some exterior scenes of the fantasy adventure movie Dragonheart (1996). The castle is declared as a national cultural monument and it is definitely worth a visit.
