It is one of the largest and most famous structures in Hampi, located near the banks of the Tungabhadra River. The legend is that the temple was built as an abode for Lord Vishnu in his Vitthala form. It is built in the form of a sprawling campus with compound wall and gateway towers, and contains many halls, pavilions and temples. It is an example of Vijayanagara style temple architecture in a more advanced form than any other temple in Hampi.
