Massachusetts Democratic Senator Edward M. Kennedy greets scholar, professor, and former ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick at a session of the Jeane Kirkpatrick Forum for Public Leadership and Public Policy at Tel Aviv University in Ramat Aviv, Israel on December 21, 1987. Kennedy had a nearly 40 years in the U.S. Senate and fought for liberal causes, especially health care. He was known as the `Lion of the Senate.` He died on Auust 25, 2009 at the age of 77 from a malignant brain tumor, in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. Kirkpatrick, who became a neoconservative Republican served as the first US Ambassador to the United Nations under President Ronald Reagan. She died on December 12, 2006 in Bethesda, Maryland, from heart disease, at the age of 80. |
