The eastern eyed click beetle, Alaus oculatus, is a large and conspicuous summer insect in eastern North America. It is also called the eyed elater. The false eye spots are conspicuous. The beetle is famous for flicking itself upright if turned on its back during which it makes a clicking sound. |
