The August 2025 sun and moon are once again shrouded in fire smoke diffusion in New York State causing some amazing red sunrise and sunsets. Outdoor air quality index breathing has become medically unhealthy due to minute particles brought in by the jet stream. Soot particles are much larger than air molecules and are more adept at scattering the yellow, orange and red wavelengths of sunlight called Rayleigh and Mie scattering. The enhanced oranges, pinks and reds during sunset occur when the Sun's rays have to travel through more smoke. That happens when the Sun is very low near the horizon rather than when it is directly overhead, hence the fiery sunsets.
