Sanderling Calidris alba. Although they generally prefer sandy sea shores, they can also be seen in ponds near the sea, sandy or pebbly stream banks and even lake shores in inland areas. They feed on insects, spiders, snails, sand mussels, worms and greenery. They prefer to live in groups in winter. One of their most distinctive features is that they follow the ends of the waves on the shores by running back and forth and feeding.
