The ÃŽles du Salut - Salvation`s Islands - are a group of three small islands about 6.8 miles - 11 km - off the coast of French Guiana in the Atlantic Ocean. The islands were used as French penal colony. The prison opened in 1852 and was closed down in 1953. Most notorious of the three islands is Devil`s Island, where Alfred Dreyfus was imprisoned for almost five years. His hut is visible. Devil`s Island and Royal Island - ÃŽle Royale - , from where this photo was taken, are separated by the Passe des Grenadines.
