Dragonfly species are characterized by long bodies with two narrow pairs of intricately veined membranous wings that while generally transparent may have coloured markings . Unlike damselflies the front and rear wing pairs are shaped differently . Their bodies are long and slender and they have a short antennae. Dragonflies are very colourful for example the green darner dragonfly has a green thorax and a blue segmented abdomen. Dragonflies in the garden are harmless to people and do not sting or bite. Dragonflies come in all sorts of colours like yellow red brown and blue sometimes the wings have brown spots and bands . They are the strongest flyers in the insect world . Compared to most other insects dragonflies can fly further and higher than other insects.
