| Wallabies, walep or saham are one of about thirty genera of the family Macropodidae. This animal is an informal sign that is usually used for any macropod smaller than a kangaroo or wallaroo that has not been given some other name. Very small forest-dwelling waleps are known as pelandu (genus Thylogale) and dorcopsises (Lau-lau genus Dorcopsis and small wallabi genus Dorcopsulus). The name wallaby comes from the Eora Aboriginal people who are the original inhabitants of the Sydney area. Young waleps are known as "joeys" in English, like many other marsupials. Walep in Indonesia can be found in South Papua, especially Wasur National Park which has the local name saham in the Marind language. One of the walep species here is the walep saham (Macropus agilis). |
