Papyrus is a plant native to the basin of the Mediterranean Sea, which reached a great diffusion in Egypt, where it grows on the banks of the Nile River and its delta. It was used to make the ancient manuscript papyri. Today, destroyed by man, its amount in the Nile has decreased significantly in recent centuries, due to the obstruction of waterways and irrigation canals.
