Red Knot Calidris canutus. It is a large, short-beaked and stocky shore bird. It feeds on muddy, sandy and pebbly sea shores devoid of vegetation. When the waters recede, they gather in flocks in certain areas close to the seashore. Its basic food groups are marine invertebrates and crustaceans. During the breeding season, its food items mostly consist of arthropods, larvae and spiders. Its most important known feature is that it spends the winter feeding in large flocks on the shores. It has a typical sandpiper feeding movement it feeds in rapid and continuous motion. It is known that they lose half of their weight during migration periods when they travel long distances.
