It lives in steppes, desert regions, shallow stagnant waters, sandy, muddy, open places, shallow lakes and rivers, mountain lakes, rice fields, dams, lagoons and swamps. It has a very wide habitat. It can be found in Australia, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, North America, Eurasia, Hawaii and the Philippines.
