Common Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs. A medium-sized finch. Found in a variety of woodlands, both deciduous and coniferous. Prefers open woodland, very common in parks and gardens, cultivated areas, orchards and hedgerows. Disperses several times outside the breeding season, and frequents open cultivated areas. The finch feeds mainly on seeds on the ground, but also consumes insects, spiders and worms, as well as some fallen fruit, especially apples. In winter it gathers seeds in large flocks on farms and orchards. However, it is very territorial during the breeding season. It feeds mainly on the ground, often in mixed groups with other finches and sparrows.
