Mahogany is a large tree with a tree height of 35–40 m and a diameter of up to 125 cm. Straight stems are cylindrical and buttless. The outer skin is blackish brown, grooved superficially like scales, while the bark is gray and smooth when it is young, turning dark brown, grooved and peeling off when old. Mahogany only flowers after the age of 7 years, the flower crown is cylindrical, brownish yellow, stamens attached to the crown, white anthers, brownish yellow. The fruit is square, ovoid, notched in five, brown. Flat seeds, black or brown in color. Mahogany can be found growing wild in teak forests and other places close to the coast, or planted by the roadside as a shade tree. This plant, which originates from the West Indies, can thrive if it grows in brackish sand close to the beach.
