Craigmillar Castle in Edinburgh was founded circa 1400 by the Preston family. It is closely associated with Mary, Queen of Scots who was a frequent visitor, and it was here in 1566 that a cabal of noblemen plotted to assassinate her husband, Lord Darnley. Although semi-ruined, the castle is still impressive.
