The Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, whose enforcers are known as the muttawa, were tasked with enforcing conservative Islamic norms of public behavior. Committee officers and volunteers patrolled public places, enforcing strict rules of hijab. In 2016 the CPVPV was disbanded by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
