The Capitoline Hill, also known as Capitolinus Mons, and referred to as Capitoline Square or simply the Capitoline, is one of Rome's most famous and tallest hills, situated between the Forum and the Campus Martius. The Spanish word capitol is derived from the Capitoline Hill. Originally named Mons Saturnius, in honor of the god Saturn, the term Capitolium initially referred to the temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus that was later constructed on this site, and subsequently came to denote the entire hill. The cordonata, or sloped road of the Capitoline Hill, leads from Via del Teatro di Marcello to Piazza del Campidoglio.
