Gold was first found around Coolgardie in 1892, and the town soon became the third largest town in Western Australia with a population of 16,000. The railway arrived in 1896 but sadly the station closed in 1976. The main street is wide enough to turn a camel train and still has a tavern serving food and cold beer.
