Asclepias syriaca. Common Milkweed. Monarch butterfly attractor. Butterflies lay their eggs on the underside of the great green leaves. The caterpillars eat the leaves leaving a milky white residue from the highly toxic sap. Monarchs are known by insect eating birds and others to be toxic and therefore avoided. Small pink and white flowers bud and bloom in clusters. Nice fragrance. |
