The adult measures between 55 and 65 cm and has a wingspan of between 88 and 105 cm; and weighs between 350 and 550 g. Its plumage is entirely white, although there are dark forms with mainly blue-gray plumage. During the summer breeding season, adults have two very long, narrow and pointed feathers protruding from behind, with a length of about 15 cm. The feathers of the chest and the scapulars are also long, reaching the latter at 20 cm.
