When most people think of San Francisco they think of the big, modern city. But as with most cities, the way San Francisco looks today is very different from how it originally was, especially the western side, which includes Golden Gate Park, which originally were all just shifting sand dunes. The original park superintends, William Hill and John McLaren, had to start by planting special grasses, then added the trees afterwards, except the very North Eastern side of the park, which already had a grove of Coast Live Oak or California Live Oak, Quercus agrifolia, that predated the park itself. Many of these original trees can still be found in the special grove there, and now these same massive, majestic trees can also be found along the sidewalk of the JFK Promenade. Come out and enjoy.
